Mission and vision statements are critical to every type of organization. The mission statement keeps an organization grounded and focused on the values and purpose by which the organization lives. The vision statement looks forward to the future impact of what is possible when an organization fulfills its mission each day.

Earlier this year, the Parks Foundation of Hendricks County (PFOHC) received a grant from the Hendricks County Community Foundation to conduct a three-year strategic plan. In this plan, the PFOHC board of directors gathered with Hedges to think critically and strategically about its goals, roadmap and long-term sustainability. In doing so, the leaders quickly turned to review the PFOHC mission statement and discuss implementing a vision statement.

Prior to convening, the mission statement for PFOHC had not been updated since its founding in 2009. The mission statement was previously: The mission of the Parks Foundation of Hendricks County is to cultivate financial resources to enhance the cultural, recreational, and natural resources of the county’s public parks.

After further review from the board, the board concluded that it was time for the mission statement of PFOHC to evolve. While the spirit of the mission remains the same, the new statement is more focused and succinct:  The mission of the Parks Foundation of Hendricks County is to grow financial resources to enhance the county’s public parks and trails.

The next order of business was crafting a vision statement for PFOHC. Members of the executive committee aimed to illustrate the result of PFOHC’s work in fundraising, programming, accessibility and creating experiences—all while keeping in mind what it truly aspires to be. The new vision statement is: The vision of the Parks Foundation of Hendricks County is to cultivate thriving outdoor experiences.

With our eyes set clearly on our mission and vision, we look forward to implementing our new strategic plan, which you can see here. We are eager to get to work and we know with our incredible partnerships and community support, we will go far together.
