The Power of the Park on Economic Development

As Executive Director of the Parks Foundation of Hendricks County, I have the unique privilege of seeing firsthand how our parks and trails shape the well-being of our community. Every visit to a trailhead, every story shared at an event, and every dollar donated reminds me that our outdoor spaces are more than just places to play—they're catalysts for connection, wellness, and economic growth.

At our recent Picnic for the Parks event, we took a moment to reflect on what 2024 revealed about the impact of the 40 parks and trails across Hendricks County.

By the Numbers: Our Parks at Work

  • 2 million visits were made to local parks and trails last year

  • 732 employees worked across park systems within Hendricks County

  • 1,202 volunteers contributed an impressive 5,521 hours

  • Our community enjoys 107.55 miles of trails and 3,700 acres of public parkland

These numbers tell the story of a community that values outdoor spaces as part of our everyday life. They represent job creation, community engagement, and a quality of life that draws families and businesses alike to Hendricks County.

Parks and Economic Development Go Hand in Hand

Public parks and trails are more than amenities—they also provide infrastructure. They support everything from physical and mental health to tourism and small business growth. Families want to live near great parks. Visitors want to explore our trails. Employers want vibrant communities that attract talent.

When we invest in our outdoor spaces, we're investing in the future of Hendricks County. That's why the Parks Foundation of Hendricks County works year-round to support projects that make our parks more accessible, more engaging, and more sustainable.

Experience the Impact Yourself: Summer Fun Run & Walk Series

One of the best ways to explore these community assets is by joining us for the Summer Fun Run & Walk Series, presented by Hendricks Regional Health. This 12-week program invites participants to walk, jog, or run a new park or trail each week—at their own pace. It’s a celebration of movement, nature, and connection.

We kick things off May 28 at Hummel Park, and we’d love for you to join us. Whether you're a longtime resident or new to the area, this series is a great way to experience the spaces that make Hendricks County such a special place to call home.

Growing Together

The Parks Foundation of Hendrick County exists to grow financial resources that enhance public parks and trails—and none of it is possible without the generous support of our donors, partners, and community members like you. Last year, we were able to award $60,000 in grants due to your generosity!

Thank you for helping us cultivate thriving outdoor experiences. We can’t wait to see you out there on the trail or in a park!
